Motivation is for amateurs

In today's episode, we're talking about motivation and I know that I've done episodes on motivation before, but this one is very, very different because I am recording this podcast from the point of view of being someone right now who is extremely unmotivated. I've got absolutely no energy and although I love talking to you, my friend, there is nothing that I wanted to do less than record this podcast right now and that's why I thought it would be important for me to record it and make it about the fact that I am absolutely unmotivated to do so.

This is the transcription of the podcast, alternatively you can listen here:

So if this is your first time listening to this podcast, please, please, please go back, listen to other episodes, whether you're looking for how to business tips on creating a virtual reality business, or you're looking for mindset and lifestyle kind of tips on going it alone as a freelancer or creating a life that you love. There's loads of episodes that dive all into that in a really positive energetic way, which is my usual state of being but this episode is going to be very different. Like I said, I wanted to do this episode about motivation, when I'm in the throes of having zero energy, and zero motivation to do anything, quite frankly and this episode is probably as much for myself as it is for some of you listening, because I'm sure that some of you are feeling exactly the same way as me. You feel drained, you feel exhausted, you feel just general malaise. The whole state of the world right now, and it can feel really difficult to, to kind of feel anything is worth doing at the moment. It's kind of difficult to place value on making a VR film, for example, when the world is still in a state of such chaos.

But that's okay and the point of this episode is to reaffirm what I would say to you, even if I was in the most high energy, motivational kind of mood, which is that it's okay not to feel motivated. But the only way that you will get motivated is by taking action and this is the biggest misconception around motivation. I'm sure a lot of you who have listened to other episodes will know that I say this all the time but motivation isn't the reason you do something. Motivation is the result of doing something. So if you like me right now, are feeling zapped of energy and just can't quite wrap your head around the idea of feeling passionate about a project at the moment, maybe think about, think about what you want to prioritise right now. Think about whether or not this is just just a temporary state of being, like it is for myself, and it will be for the majority of you listening. Sometimes, obviously being unmotivated can be helpful, because it will, it will be your way of seeing that the project or the the areas you're putting your effort are not necessarily the right ones, like sometimes not feeling motivated, can tell you that you're not necessarily focusing on the right thing, or you're not doing something that you actually love, that can be really powerful. But most of the time not being motivated is a result of just not being in the right headspace and not having the energy to take action, because that's where motivation is waiting for you at the end of the task that you should be completing. Which sounds really clinical I know. But I read recently, this quite harsh quote that said motivation is for amateurs and I do tend to agree with that.

Like right now, I'm not going to live, this is probably not going to be the best podcast episode I've ever recorded in my life. You might not get as much from this episode as you would have done if I was in a better mood or in a better state of mind but I promise to you guys, and I made a promise to myself that I would show up every single Monday with a new podcast episode and it felt totally different, it would have felt totally disingenuous to do an episode on anything other than how I'm feeling right now. But I'm still showing up and I'm still doing it because although I've not got the energy and the kind of the passion and the vim and vigour that I normally would show up to these episodes with right now. I know that motivation is waiting for me at the end of doing this, because more than anything, taking action is the thing that leads to motivation. Already, I'm only five minutes into recording this, and I already feel better for doing it. I've procrastinated so hard, not wanting to do it. I was waiting to feel in a better headspace, I was waiting to feel more energetic but I know that really the only way to get motivated is to start taking action on the thing you know, you need to do.

So this is just a super short and sweet episode, because, you know, there will be other episodes where I can give you super practical advice and I'm hoping that even just hearing that I'm in the same position of a lot of you right now might, in a way be helpful. And I hope that's the case, I hope that if you're listening and you're not feeling motivated, and you're feeling particularly fed up, I hope that by hearing that I am in exactly the same position as you, you feel a sense of relief that you are not alone, because you're not...you're absolutely not alone. But if you want to be a successful freelancer, to have a successful business, to live a long term, happier life and be fulfilled by the work that you do, it is important that sometimes you don't wait for motivation. In fact, you always just show up even when you don't feel like it, that is the most important thing. It's important to recognise that you're not supposed to feel motivated all the time and actually, it's interesting, just going on a slight tangent.

I feel like recently, I've come to the conclusion that I myself and maybe this will resonate with you listening, I can sometimes conflate energy with motivation. Like when I wake up on days, and I feel just full of energy and excitement and I'm just in generally a more energetic state of being, I will find myself being more motivated and being more productive and that can sometimes reinforce the idea in my head, that motivation is a feeling. But the motivation is not a feeling. It's not that the days that I wake up feeling more motivated that I am more motivated. The fact is that when I wake up on days with more energy, I'm more likely to do things, I'm more likely to be productive, I'm more likely to take action because I've got loads of energy. And it's to use an analogy, I guess it's like when you turn on the car ignition, and it starts up really quickly, and then you're off like the car is buzzing, you're ready to go and on days that you don't have energy, that process can feel so, so hard. And it's not that on days, you don't have energy that you are necessarily more likely to be demotivated, It's just that it's harder to take action. It's harder to get yourself going to get yourself in that mindset to actually want to do things and it's the doing of things that makes you motivated that makes you feel like you're on a roll that gives you the inspiration, and even more energy to keep on going. And when you're having a day like I happen today where you're just zapped of energy and you couldn't think of anything worse than to try and be productive and it can take a lot to actually get to the point where you actually do take the action. But as soon as you do take the action, you start to get motivated, like right now, I feel great recording this podcast. I've still not got loads of energy, but I feel great for doing this and I feel proud and I'm, you know, I'm super into it. I'm super passionate because I do genuinely love doing these podcasts and I knew that if I just started doing the podcast, if I just showed up, even though I didn't want to that motivation was waiting for me on the other side.

So I'm not really sure whether any of this was helpful or it resonated. I guess I just wanted to make a podcast episode that isn't like a highlight reel and I know that I've shared times in the past when I've been burned out, or I've just not really been feeling in the mood to do anything and that's a really important part of this process for me, I want you to feel like you know me, because I feel like I've made some really amazing friends through doing this podcast and I feel like the more that I can share, even the slightly dimmer days, not dark days, but you know, the slightly more slightly dimmer days, the less energetic side of my personality, and to show you that I'm only human. I also have days and weeks and months where I'm just severely lacking any kind of energy and thinking, again, from the point of view of motivation, like having no motivation to do anything but knowing still that the only way to get it, and the only way to be a professional, and the only way to to get yourself into a position to get more motivated, is to continue on through these periods, and take action.

So that's it for this week's episode. I'm sorry that this isn't anywhere close to being the normal kind of podcast that I put out but I would love to hear from you. I would love to hear that I'm not going mad. And I'm not the only one feeling like this, because the people that I talk to, in my everyday life, are feeling quite similar to me, they're feeling a bit brain fog and a bit fed up and exhausted and finding it quite difficult to have that initial burst of energy to do the things that we know we need to do. So I'd love to hear from you, if that's you. And I would also love to encourage you to do one thing today, that is going to be taking a step in the direction you want to go. Don't let the fact that you're unmotivated and you've got no energy stop you from making progress, because this time doesn't have to be a step backwards, it doesn't have to be a complete standstill. It just means that you're not running, you know, top speed at the moment, you're just maybe having a little meander and maybe after meandering for a little bit, you'll pick up pace and you'll start to feel a bit more energy and you'll start to get a pacey little walk on and then maybe in a week's time, you'll be absolutely buzzing and you'll be running full speed ahead again. The important thing is just to keep going and know that this is all part of the process and this is totally natural and you don't always have to be hyper productive but you do have to continually take action and put in the work. Because motivation will not just spring up on you like a magical unicorn that just appears out of nowhere, motivation will appear when you take steps towards the thing that you want to achieve. So that's it. I know I've said that about four times already. I just don't want to go guys. Oh, it feels good to talk to you.
